From a ‘Cursed’ Wedding Dress to a Cinderella Night

A dress from a cancelled wedding became the highlight of Magic Wonderland - and taught me that changing the meaning can change the story.

When Life Changes the Plan

There are times in our lives when events hit us so hard that we don’t even know what tomorrow is going to look like.

This happens to all of us at some point in our lives. But today, I would like to tell you that life has been teaching me something: those events that feel like the end of the world can actually be the beginning of a wonderful transformation—if we surrender to life’s plan for us.

And this is one of those stories.

Sometimes what feels like the end is life making space for a transformation we cannot yet see.

The Wedding of My Dreams

Three years ago, I thought I was with the man of my life, planning the wedding of my dreams.

As we went through all the planning—ordering the wedding bands, choosing the venue, preparing the invitations—the universe started showing us that things were going wrong.

And, of course, like any person who is convinced she is walking her true path, when things start going wrong, panic mode kicks in and we immediately try to fix them.

So, we fixed one detail.

Then another.

And another.

And another.

You keep trying to fix everything until one final hit simply throws you to the ground.

The Final Detail

For me, that final detail was a wedding dress.

It was ordered from a designer and meant to come straight out of a fairy tale. Instead, it became the final disappointment we could no longer bear.

It was supposed to be a surprise, but it ended up being a deception. A designer who did not understand my true essence, and a dress that ended up being exactly the opposite of the image I had dreamed about.

I know that, said like this, it may not seem like enough to cancel a wedding. But, as I mentioned, this was only the final event in a long series of things moving in the wrong direction.

For the full story of the cancelled wedding, I invite you to read my book. I will add the link at the end of this article.

But today, I want to talk about how life can give us the opportunity to transform such a traumatic outcome into something beautiful.

The Dress That Would Not Sell

For three years, I tried to sell that very expensive dress.

At first, I tried selling it for what it was worth. After all, it was brand-new, haute couture, and quite a gown.

Then I lowered the price.

And lowered it again.

I went from trying to sell it for its real value to practically giving it away.

But it never sold.

Not when it was expensive.

Not when it was cheap.

Often, I prayed for that dress to be sold so I could finally get rid of it. But it never happened.

And many times, I asked the universe what the message was.

Why wouldn’t the dress sell?

I simply could not understand.

Eventually, I put it inside a box, hid it in the back of a closet, and forgot about it.

Sometimes what refuses to leave our lives still has something to teach us.

Until Two Weeks Ago

Until two weeks ago.

My oldest daughter came to my house to help me sell a few extra things. It is garage-sale season in Quebec, so we use this time of year to free some space in our garages and liberate ourselves from things we no longer use.

As we were going through the list of things we wanted to sell, the dress came back to our minds.

That was when my daughter suggested that it might be easier to sell if we took photos of me wearing it, instead of simply displaying it on top of a bed.

I was not sure I wanted to do that.

But, at the same time, in my mind, it was more than time for that dress to go away.

I am now in another phase of my life. I have a new partner, a new path, and so many new possibilities being created. In my mind, it was time to let go of everything connected to the past.

So, I tried on the dress.

A dress that, in my mind, had always been far too much for a wedding.

A Different Pair of Eyes

And then my new partner walked into the room.

He looked at me wearing it, and he was completely in awe.

At that moment, we were preparing to travel to Mindvalley University in just a few weeks, and he made me realize that this dress would be perfect for one of the themed parties.

Of course, my first reaction came directly from my ego.

It immediately screamed:

“No! I do not want to wear a dress from a cancelled wedding!”

But as we continued taking photos, and as I looked at myself in those pictures, I realized something.

He was right.

The dress I had always looked at with disdain—the dress I had even cursed—was, in fact, the perfect dress for our upcoming event.

Now, the real question was: could I overcome all the emotional attachments connected to my past experience?

I am always up for a good challenge, especially one that allows me to grow. So, I decided to take the dress with me.

And I did.

Magic Wonderland

The theme of the party was “Magic Wonderland,” so needless to say, my partner was absolutely right.

That dress became the highlight of my night.

It was simply impossible not to be noticed while wearing it, and its energy went from feeling like a curse to making me feel like a queen.

And then it hit me.

The problem was never the dress.

The problem was all the emotions I had created around it.

The dress had not changed. I had.

The Problem Was Never the Dress

Sometimes, the emotions we attach to objects and circumstances become so deep that they blind us to reality.

Most of the time, all we have to do is detach ourselves from the physical meaning we have given to things. We must take the opportunity to understand and heal our emotions.

And then, from a place of hope, curiosity, and even a little courage—because I definitely needed courage when I decided to wear that dress to that party—we can transform our lives.

We can transform our experiences.

And we can change our outcomes.

And just like that, a tragic destiny became a happy ending.

Change the meaning. Change the energy. Change the outcome.

Key takeaways

  • The meaning we attach to an object can become more powerful than the object itself.
  • Changing perspective does not erase the past; it gives us the freedom to create a new relationship with it.
  • Courage, curiosity, and emotional healing can transform a painful reminder into a symbol of possibility.

Common questions

Can changing perspective really change your life?

Changing perspective cannot rewrite what happened, but it can change the meaning you carry forward, the choices you make, and the possibilities you allow yourself to see.

How do objects become emotionally charged?

Objects can become connected to memories, expectations, grief, or disappointment. Over time, we may react to the emotional story around the object rather than to the object itself.

How can I begin transforming a painful memory?

Begin gently. Notice the meaning you have attached to the memory, honour the emotions it carries, and ask whether the person you are today might be ready to give it a new purpose.
